We were thrilled to find these exceedingly rare hand carved Hedaio beads. The miniature folk art of fruit pit carving has been practiced in China for centuries. Made in the first half of 20th century, these are elaborate and finely carved beads with a continuous landscape scene, like a diorama. Depicted are stands of foliage, hills, clouds and a hut or temple. These images are wrapped around the beads. These beads were purchased in an estate sale and we were extremely fortunate to find them. Carvings with this level of handwork are not being produced today. Each is individually hand carved and vary slightly in size and detail. Average size is 31x15mm. Each one is a small work of art, completely hand carved and hollowed out with meticulous detail. Sold individually.
I really like the matrices in Hubei turquoise and these don't disappoint. The range of colors is really nice. I have combined these beads with shell heishi (also available from Earthly Adornments), silver and carnelian, the result is stunning (friend's opinion). Next project will be with citrine and brass. They are very versatile.
This is the second or third time I have purchased this bead. It is very unique and works well with lots of colors and styles. I made a bracelet last month with several of these beads in it. I did not even get a chance to list the bracelet, someone bought it off my arm (I test drive my pieces).
I highly recommend it as I do working with Earthly Adornments - they are professional, very helpful and knowledgeable. They have an excellent supply of vintage and antique beads.
