Details

These spindle whorls are very are traditional tribal pieces and are contemporary versions of an ancient black terracotta fired clay spindle whorl. These were originally used to firm the spindle when spinning yarn and have often been used as ornaments as well. The hole bored through the middle to enable hanging the whorl from the spindle creates a bead as well. Spindle whorls are most often "bicone" shaped with one side flat and the other conical, but not always. These are more round/ There is a long fascinating history to spindle whorls, they've been excavated all over the world: medieval Europe, the Americans, Africa, Asia....and have been found in many different materials. These are beautifully decorated and lend themselves to necklace focal beads.
