Not for the faint-hearted, this necklace is an extravagant composition of antique Japanese Satsuma plaques connected with 9 strands of individually knotted carnelian and jasper beads. The pieces was designed by Mari-Shel, a jewelry dealer in Los Angeles in the 1970's. Featured are 5 Japanese Satsuma plaques set in gold washed sterling. Each plaque depicts a gathering of women and girls in diverse attire. Satsuma is elaborately painted porcelain with a crackled cream glaze. The paint in each of these is very fine with excellent detail and minimal paint loss. Each plaque has the Satsuma chop on the back. The bead work is mostly carnelian beads with darker and lighter jasper beads mixed in. Bead sizes range from 4 to 9mm. The upper side hexagonal plaques measure 1.8 x 1.9 inches. The crescent plaque is 2 inches wide and the bottom is 1.7 x 1.3 inches. This necklace is expertly knotted and the strands are gathered into a sterling silver push-in clasp at the back of the neck. the inner circumference of the necklace is 22 inches. 255 grams
