AA Quality, Japanese Akoya Saltwater Cultured Pearls, loose, semi round & semi baroque shaped, off white to cream colored, approximate size 6-8mm x 5.5–7.5mm, Package of 10. From a dealer's estate 1970s-1980s.
A pearl is formed inside of an oyster when minute hexagonal crystals of aragonite and conchiolin are deposited over an bead made from Mississippi mussel shell. This layer is called nacre. The layered nature of the structure contributes to the luster of the pearl. Exceptional saltwater pearls have a thick layer of nacre, and often an iridescent cast of color in on the outer surface of pinks and greens called “orient”.
These baroque pearls are exceptional in their luster, sometimes so reflective they look metallic. These pearls vary a bit in size, with most falling in between 6-8mm x 5.5-7.5mm. They are sold unstrung in packages of 10 pearls.
