pnvc1013-Victorian "Grand Tour" gilt hollow metal Roman brooch

In the 19th century it was customary for couples of means to make a grand tour of Europe, particularly Italy. There are many pieces of souvenir jewelry still in circulation. This brooch is a gilded hollow metal repoussé depiction of 3 figures holding and struggling with a great serpent. This is a depiction of Laocoon and his Sons, and a reproduction of an ancient Greek status that was dug up in Rom in the 16th century and placed in the Vatican. (thank you, Kim). The pin back has been nicely replaced with a newer safety clasp. 1 3/8 x 1 5/8 inches.
