Edwardian and Transitional Jewelry
Edwardian jewelry is delicate, detailed and of high quality. After living under the yolk of the mourning queen Victoria for so many years, society under her son Edward exploded. Lavish parties, fashion and jewelry mark this era where lace was truly made in platinum. Diamonds and other gemstones were showcased with the most delicate platinum and settings, all made possible by the advances in stone cutting and metal work during this period. Edwardian jewelry exudes femininity and sophistication which were brought into vogue by Edwards’s queen Alexandra. The jewelry of this period was designed to highlight the ultra feminine fashions and lush satins, lace and feathers used to outfit the upper class.

Several motifs are found in Edwardian jewelry, one of which is the bow, used in fashion to accessorize gowns and hats of the period. Rather than a ribbon, an extravagant and elegant platinum and diamond bow brooch would be used. This style was quickly replicated into more affordable materials and different color options. Floral motifs were also popular in Edwardian jewelry with platinum stems and diamond flower petals. The delicate use of platinum and the millgrain technique are also important to antique Edwardian jewelry. With the understanding that platinum was the strongest metal that could be used, precious gems could be set in open, lacy settings with complete security. The millgrain technique was frequently implemented, and this was done by using a thin piece of platinum which would secure the stone with a ridged edge, or it might be textured with tiny beads or grains. This thin and secure rim around the diamond was both pleasing to the eye and added strength to the setting.
